About

Antonia Aitken is a printmaker living and making in Canberra, Australia.  Her environment-based practice has awarded her opportunities to exhibit and undertake residencies nationally and internationally. In 2011 she was awarded the inaugural Capital Arts Patrons Organisation (CAPO) Reading Room Exhibition Award to travel her exhibition River to Reading Room Gallery in London. Her most recent residencies include a Spring Fellowship at Women’s Studio Workshop, Rosendale NY and the 2011 International Residency at Black Church Print Studio, Dublin. Antonia was the Press Studio Manager for Megalo Print Studio + Gallery in Canberra from 2007 - 2011 and has taught printmaking in various capacities for a number of years. She is currently teaching printmaking at the Australian National University in the Printmedia and Drawing Workshop.

Antonia’s practice is largely site-specific and uses predominantly intaglio and relief printmaking techniques to make large-scale abstractions and performative interactions with her environment. She is interested in landscapes that bare witness to significant human impact and the ongoing struggles of a post-colonial society. The work attempts to raise questions about how we use, understand and visually represent our relationship to these sites over time. By walking, drawing and using the materials directly from each site, Antonia gathers a language in which to interpret the place and her physical presence within it.
